Black Widow Spider Photo

I took this photo of a black widow in its web in Mooresville, NC on 26 September 2001.The spider is covered with dew drops. It has its abdomen to the camera. Note the red hourglass marking. These spiders can inflict a bite when cornered, but normally flee quickly when they feel the slightest vibration. The bite can make humans very ill (or worse). I had to sneak up on this one. I used a Sony MVC-CD1000 camera in macro mode with no flash.

This photo was originally 5.7 Mb (bmp). I trimmed it down to 947 Kb. bmp and then down to 36 kb. (jpg) for the website. I had to do this in order to conserve website space.

It still looks pretty sharp.
